Brukarros Meat Processors (Pty) Ltd (BMP) is a sheep slaughtering facility situated in the far southern parts of Namibia. The establishment was previously known as Karas Abattoir and Tannery Processors and belonged to the Government Institutional Pension Fund (GIPF) of Namibia. During the first years after being newly established, only ostriches were slaughtered. The ostrich industry, however, collapsed during 2003, after which the multimillion dollar facility was converted into a fully fletched sheep slaughtering facility. Soon afterwards the GIPF offered the business for sale and the current owners acquired the facility through a tender process.
The stakeholders of BMP are a consortium of individuals and Namibian based companies and officially opened its doors for business during ...January 2008. Initially all efforts were focused on obtaining export status to the European Union. BMP applied for EU-inspection during July 2008 and obtained full access to the EU on 26 January 2009 for all deboned lamb and venison products.
The plant has an official slaughter capacity of 1500 sheep/day with a deboning operational capacity of 300 carcasses per day. The majority of sheep and lamb carcasses are, however, marketed into the neighboring South Africa.
BMP is situated in the country side, 20 km outside the town of Keetmanshoop on the farm Coenbult, next to the B4-national road en-route to the coastal town of Luderitz.
BMP also possesses its own sheep skin pickling plant adjacent to the abattoir, where the skills and technical expertise of Italian stakeholders are utilized to produce a product which is highly in demand in the international leather industry. Brukarros Skins is capable of processing 4500 sheep skins per day, which are directly exported to Italy.
BMP's stakeholders support the Government of Namibia's Vision 2030, which aims at industrializing the Namibian economy through diversification, value addition and job * labour force at the abattoir and tannery totals more than 200 permanent employees and is a major role player in the economic stability of Namibia's Karas Region.
The extreme southern parts of Namibia are, like the rest of the country, enriched with an abundance of wild life and to accommodate the diversified nature of the various ecosystems, BMP also ventured into the sustainable harvesting of small wild ungulates (Springbuck - Antidorcas marsupialis). Game and domestic animals are kept on large farms where they are capable of roaming freely on natural pastures. Read more
